ForeFlight, Italy and the Fine Art of Doing Your Homework

An excellent app. A magnificent landscape. Still no substitute for a proper briefing.

I rate ForeFlight highly. It is one of those tools that makes modern flying feel considerably better organised.

On a VFR trip through the Dolomites towards Asiago, however, a communications lookup did not give me the answer I expected. The scenery remained impeccable. My information did not.

A blank field is not an answer

Missing information on a screen does not mean there is no relevant frequency, procedure or requirement. It means I still have something to establish.

That experience does not justify declaring the app broken across Italy, blaming a particular data supplier without evidence, or assuming another app is infallible. All rather tempting shortcuts. None especially useful.

For the actual route, the current official publications, NOTAM, weather and applicable procedures come first. ENAV provides access to Italian aeronautical information.

Prepare before the view becomes distracting

I am deliberately not publishing an “always correct” frequency or a sweeping nationwide regulatory claim here. Those belong in an up-to-date briefing, not a travel essay with a long shelf life.

ForeFlight remains a tool I value. Responsibility for preparation remains mine.

Italy is still spectacular from the air. It simply deserves homework completed before the mountains begin competing for your attention.
