Ocean Spice: A Very Good Reason to Stay for Another Drink

Warm air, sea views and a kitchen that remembers the view is not the main course.

Some restaurants seem to assume that a sea view has cooked dinner on their behalf. Ocean Spice, on Samui, did not give me that impression.

Warm air, lights over the water, a cocktail: an excellent opening. The food kept up.

More than a pretty setting

The Thai dishes felt considered and balanced. Presentation was attractive without turning the plate into a small architectural competition.

Service was attentive without hovering. That elusive skill of being available while allowing an evening to remain yours.

Compared with many places on Samui, this was an expensive dinner. I found the overall experience worth it, but the price belongs in an honest account.

What stayed with me was not a single theatrical flourish. It was the ease of the whole evening: good food, pleasant service and no particular desire to leave.

The sea carried on outside. Another drink seemed defensible.

Travel has produced less sound decisions.
