I knew Koh Samui when its airport felt more like a friendly hut with aviation ambitions. The island has changed considerably. So have I, although my interest in a comfortable poolside arrangement remains impressively consistent.
Vana Belle, on Chaweng Noi, became part of that long relationship.
The people make the place
The setting is lovely: gardens, Thai architectural touches, private pools and very little incentive to rush. But those are the things you can buy. The reason I return has names.
Max by the pool. Tik in the butler team. People who notice habits without making a production of it, and know when conversation is welcome and when the sea is doing a perfectly adequate job.
A thoughtful welcome in the room says more than a decorative mountain of cushions ever could.
Familiar faces in unfamiliar times
Returning during the pandemic period, once travel was possible, felt different. Bangkok and Samui were unusually quiet: beautiful, but with sadness behind the empty spaces. The warmth at the hotel remained.
That memory matters more to me than another list of facilities.
Vana Belle is not my universal answer to “the best hotel”. People want different things. It is simply where a holiday began to feel like coming back to people I knew.
A home from home. With rather better access to the sea.
